Our Management

Steve Potter is founder and president of Operational Excellence, medical LLC.  His career spans over 35 years of increasingly responsible management experience in the retail grocery and foodservice distribution industries with such companies as Hannaford Bros., PYA/Monarch, Atlantic Food Services, Alliant, and US Foodservice, with positions at Corporate Director, Vice President, Senior Vice President/General Manager, and Executive Vice President levels. In May 2004 he joined IFDA as Senior Vice President, Industry Relations and remained in that position until October 2009 when he returned to Operational Excellence, LLC.

Steve offers extensive expertise in organizational diagnostics, business process re-engineering, and innovative solutions based on real experience:

  • Due diligence and pre and post-acquisition integration planning and implementation for over a dozen foodservice distribution companies
  • Operational continuity and improvement responsibility for over 40 distribution centers nationwide
  • Fleet spec’ing and procurement for over 40 fleets
  • Numerous turnarounds, resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars in bottom line improvements
  • Project management: warehouse consolidations and expansions; full service and maintenance lease renegotiations; labor contract negotiations; major initiatives including routing systems, onboard computers, inbound freight programs, fleet maintenance/warranty programs, and safety initiatives
  • Innovative thinking -  Design and implementation of the foodservice industry’s first barcode-driven, real time WMS that included the selection process; implementation of the industry’s first use of RFID for yard management; trailer multi-temperature refrigeration designs; the first USDA approved in-rack storage design for raw poultry; and design of the side step commonly used on trailers today
  • Industry involvement in major initiatives involving traceability, GS1 standards, food safety and security

Professional and Association Activities:

Nationally recognized for his many accomplishments as an industry leader, he has served as chairman of numerous committees for NAWGA, IFDA, FDI, and Sara Lee Corporation as well as on various Boards of Directors. He is a frequent speaker at numerous industry events and national conferences, has served on numerous committees involved with traceability, GS1 standards, and food safety, and is the author of IFDA’s highest selling publication – The Foodservice Distribution Operational Benchmarking Report.  In July 2009 he received IMFA’s highly-regarded Spark Plug Award for his leadership and  ability to create collaboration in the adoption of GS1 product data standards in the foodservice supply chain.
